Based in San Marcos, California, Blast Motion is an information company that provides motion analysis and performance insights. By intelligently combining the bio-mechanics of movement with sensor data, video capture technology, and cloud-based software services, Blast has redefined the way people coach, recruit, train, analyze, and improve their game.
Foghorn is proud to have worked alongside their cloud team to deliver a powerful solution on AWS.
The Challenge
Blast Motion historically ran several applications on virtual machines that required access to their managed relational database servers located in a managed service provider. Blast had a large data set, but only moderate CPU and RAM requirements.
Due to the limited packaged offerings at their current managed service provider, Blast was required to over provision their CPU and RAM in order to get the required amount of storage for their database infrastructure. In addition, it made sense to get their database closer to their cloud native modernized infrastructure.
Our Solution
After containerizing and migrating the applications to EKS, Foghorn designed an RDS based solution that allowed for proper sizing of the database environments, and secure connectivity to the containerized applications. Although the dataset was large, much of the data was historical, and the change rate as a percentage of total data was low.
This allowed a relatively simple data migration strategy which included an initial data dump and restore into RDS. Following QA testing, a final differential dump was migrated during a relatively short maintenance period. A final DNS flip completed the migration, Blast was up and running in the cloud with little drama and no customer impact.
The final solution included:
- EKS
- RDS
- Route 53
- VPC
- ALB
Results and Benefits
Blast realized an immediate impact on their overall infrastructure spend. The migration allows Blast to save over 50% on their monthly database infrastructure costs.
In addition, Blast’s new containerized application infrastructure is easier to scale and manage, and RDS brought along some additional perks, like hassle free high availability and backup/restore capabilities.
Blast continues to scale their customer base without worry about increased capacity needs, and continues to innovate at record pace with the flexibility that cloud brings to their product development teams.
